Spaying or Neutering Your Pet in Allegan, MI

Did you know that spaying or neutering your pet can help prevent certain illnesses and diseases and help your pet live longer? Spaying after your pet's first heat cycle can decrease the risk of a pyometra (infection of the uterus) and it can prevent over-population of dogs and cats.

Both of these routine operations completely remove your pet's reproductive organs so that they no longer feel the need to mate or advertise for a mate, which can lead to behavioral problems. It's also much more cost-effective than caring for a little fur baby.

Call us today to learn more about our spaying and neutering services at Allegan Animal Clinic.

Benefits of Spaying and Neutering

Having your pet spayed or neutered at Allegan Animal Clinic provides certain health benefits that can help your pet live a long and happy life.

The major benefits of spaying and neutering include:

  • Prevention of testicular cancer in male pets
  • Prevention of uterine infections and tumors in your female pet's breasts
  • Better behavior of male and female pets (sometimes)
  • Lessen the likelihood of your male pet roaming for a mate
  • Prevent female cats from advertising for a mate by yowling and urinating

Spaying Your Pet

Female pets can be spayed after their first heat cycle. The benefit of waiting till their first heat cycle is that your pet can get all the essential hormones.

The process of spaying your pet involves completely removing the uterus and ovaries through a small incision. This procedure can be done less than an half hour unless your pet is in heat at the time of operation. It is best for the Veterinarian to wait 2 weeks after their heat cycle to get your pet spayed.

All spay surgeries are performed under general anesthesia. After the procedure your pet will stay the night at our clinic. This is for observation of your pet and to make sure that she stays as calm as possible after her invasive surgery.

We do ask that you monitor the incision and make sure your pet does not try to bite or scratch the area. Your pet will need to have reduced activity levels for up to two weeks, but most pets feel much better the day after surgery.

Neutering Your Pets

Neutering your male pet involves making a small incision in the testicle sack and completely removing the testicles. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and only takes a few minutes.

On rare cases if the testicle is not distended from the abdomen we will have to procedure into the abdomen to get the testicle. This can add more time to the neuter and at that point he would have to stay the night for monitoring.

Once your male pet wakes up from his surgery, he can go home with you the same day.

Like female pets, we do ask that you monitor the incision for signs of infection and proper healing and prevent your pet from scratching or biting the area.

It usually takes one or two weeks for the area to heal, but your pet should start acting normally as early as the day after surgery.

Spaying and Neutering at Allegan Animal Clinic

Allegan Animal Clinic offers spaying and neutering for all sizes and breeds of dogs and cats. When you schedule your pet’s surgery, we will give you pre-surgery instructions, which usually include not feeding your pet for a certain period of time prior to the surgery.

After the surgery, we will give you instructions on how to care for the wound and the signs of infections to look for while the incision is healing. If you have any questions or concerns before, during, or after your pet’s spay or neuter, Dr. VanDenBrink would be happy to answer them.
